The Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY

Painting a wall doesn't have to be just a plain color. It can also have a focal point like the wood panel ones we used. Check out how we transformed our family room wall from plain yellow paint to a fabulous focal point with a new color and three wooden panels we found on Amazon (affiliate). Stick around and follow the steps below to get inspired!

What inspired me to do The Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY?

I had a motivational quote (affiliate) vinyl sign on the wall under the slit unit I have in the room, and after deciding to paint the room, I wanted to have another focal piece of art to be placed on the wall. Looking around in various stores, I couldn't find anything that worked well for that area. They were either too large or too small, or too narrow. Ugh. I thought it would be neat if there were a pop of yellow behind the wall art to make it look like the sun behind the trees.

What supplies did I use to make The Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY?

These products were pretty easy to find.

Supplies used:

  • 1 gallon of paint - we used Baer Marquee Canyon Dusk Eggshell from Home Depot (NOT an affiliate link)
  • Paint Brushes
  • BINCUE Large 3D Wood Wall Art Carved 3 Panels Birch Tree Shape Boho 16x32 Inch from Amazon(affiliate) - includes screws
  • Tools (affiliate) used: laser level, painter's tape (affiliate), pencil

Please note that these are affiliate links through Amazon (affiliate). If you decide to make a purchase, I will earn an affiliate commission at no additional cost.

How much did making The Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY cost?

The panels cost about $68.99 + tax + paint $40.00 per gallon, making this transformation cost about $109.00.

How long did making The Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY take?

It took about two days to paint, let dry, and hang the wooden wall art.

How did I make this The Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY?

First, we removed the previous motivational vinyl sign on the wall and cleaned the wall with a wash to remove dust and debris. The product we used was Krud Kutter No Rinse Prepaint Cleaner (affiliate). Here is the way the walls looked before we started painting. Disregard the laser pointer. =)

BEFORE IMAGE - center on the wall and line up the laser level line to the top of the panels

Then, we determined where the panels would go and marked the corners of each panel with a pencil.

Mark with a pencil the corners on the wall for the painters tape.

We hung them up using the screws they provided. The screws had a rubber support that brought it out a bit from the wall to allow for the panel to be raised from the wall. Since the hooks are about 1 inch lower, we placed the laser level line at the top part of the panel line so we knew where to add the screws.

Add the screw to the wall about 1 inch below the edge of the wood frame

We removed the panels and added 1 inch of painter's tape (affiliate) to cover the areas where the artwork would be hanging. This would block the paint from going to the inside, where the yellow paint would show.

Painter's Tape on Wall

Next, we painted the wall and worked around the painter's tape (affiliate) areas. We let it dry and reapplied a second coat.

After we painted the wall and removed the painters tape

After the walls dried, we added the wood panels back to the already hung screws.

The Big Reveal

This focal wall with paint and panels DIY project looks lovely. We hope this post inspires you to create a focal point on your wall. It is super easy as long as you know how to paint. =) Happy decorating.

Tips on making this Focal Wall with Paint and Panels DIY

You need to know a few tips when doing this DIY project.

  • Determine if you want the panels natural or white or if you plan on painting them. If you plan on painting them a different color, you must allocate extra time before prepping and painting the wall.
  • They have other designs, so you can pick ones that are not trees.

This looks great! Although it seems like it would be a lot less hassle to just attach a thin backing board to the art pieces in the desired color. The effect would be the same, they'd be moveable, and you wouldn't have to be so precise painting your wall. Just food for thought for others considering it...

Great idea. Thanks for commenting. I did not have the paint color available and preferred not to modify the panels.
