What inspired me to do these Herb Bomb Recipes?
I switched to a Smart Orbit garden watering system this year (see previous post) and found that my herbs lasted significantly longer than usual and grew twice as large. So, I ended up with an abundance of herbs this year and didn't want them to go to waste, so I decided to create herb bombs to use up a lot of them and preserve them for next year.
While researching herb bomb recipes, I found that many people did not include a variation of these herbs in one frozen herb bomb. So, I decided to mix things up and share herb-boosted recipes that enhance flavor without adding new ingredients. Follow along and explore the various recipes. Enjoy!
Tools to use to make herb bomb recipes.
Let's first talk about the tools (affiliate) you will need to make these recipes. Below are the things I used to make these Herb Bomb recipes easy and quick. The longest time it took was to freeze them. =)
- A chef's knife (affiliate), being sharp and sturdy, will help chop these herbs finely.
- Cutting board (affiliate) - Have a good-quality one.
- Ice cube trays with silicone bottoms make it easier to pop the bombs out after they are frozen.
- Freezer quart or gallon bag - After the bombs are frozen, I toss them into a freezer bag and label (affiliate) it for easy access when I need them.
Option 1: Garlic Basil, Parsley, and Olive Oil Herb Bombs Recipe
The first combination of herb bombs recipe was created to be used when I make my homemade weeknight tomato sauce (affiliate) recipe: 20 Minute Tomato Sauce (Sugo) Recipe. It is a super easy recipe and can be done while your pasta water is boiling and your pasta is cooking.
What ingredients and supplies did I use to make the Herb Bombs Recipe?
- 2 tablespoon Garlic, peeled and minced
- 2 tablespoon Parsley Leaves, finely chopped, remove stems
- 1 tablespoon Basil leaves, finely chopped, remove stems
- 1 cup or less Extra Virgin Olive Oil (affiliate)
- 1- Ice Cube Tray
- Mortar and Pestle (affiliate)

How much did it cost to make these Garlic Basil, Parsley, and Olive Oil Herb Bombs?
It cost very little - I bought the olive oil (affiliate), the herb plants (basil and parsley), and the garlic heads. A total of $5.00-and I have a lot of supplies left over.
How long did it take to make the Garlic, Basil, Parsley, and Olive Oil Herb Bombs Recipe?
It takes about 15 minutes to make, from chopping to adding the olive oil (affiliate). But the freezing process takes at least 2-3 hours.
How did I make this Garlic and Herb Bombs Recipe?
First, cut fresh basil leaves and parsley leaves from the herb garden. Then, clean the leaves in a bowl of water. Lay out the tea cloths on the counter and place the clean leaves on them. Using a paper towel, lay it on top of the leaves and dab dry. Then, remove the paper towel and let the herbs air dry.
Then, finely chop the parsley and basil. And, mince the garlic also. Mix well in a mortar and pestle (affiliate) or small bowl.
Now, add about 1 tablespoon of parsley, basil, and minced garlic to each compartment of the ice cube tray. It makes 10 herb bombs.
Next, add olive oil (affiliate), completely covering the herbs in each compartment. Freeze until solid and transfer to a freezer bag and label (affiliate) "Garlic Basil, Parsley, and Olive Oil (affiliate) Herb Bombs Recipe".
To remove the cubes from the tray, slide the tray mold into a gallon bag and twist the tray until the frozen herb bombs fall out.

Tips on making this Freeze Fresh Herbs in Olive Oil
Below are some tips to help you make successful herb bombs for freezing.
- Use trays that easily pop out. I got mine from Amazon (affiliate).
- A marble mortar and pestle (affiliate) work well to combine the minced ingredients.
- Ensure that the olive oil completely covers the herbs in the tray.
- Ensure the ice cube tray mold is level when freezing.
- Add the frozen tray to a zip-lock bag, then pop it out from the back. And remove the tray.
- Be sure to use cylicon ice cube trays for easy removal.
- Use large gallon bags to easily remove the herb bombs. Place the entire tray into the bag and twist it for easy removal.
What type of meat pairs well with all these herb-infused bombs?
I find that the following meat works well and imparts a rich flavor with just one to two frozen cubes. If you are using thin-cut meat (1-2 pieces), one or two herb bombs are perfect. However, if you have a pound of meat that is thicker, you may need 3-4 herb bombs to achieve the full flavor throughout the meat.
- Thin chicken breasts or cubed chicken breasts
- Thin steak or ground beef
- Pork tenderloin (thin pieces)
- Port chops (thin cut)
Vegetables like potatoes also pair well with these herb bombs. You can also add them to sauces, such as tomato and cream versions.
I hope these herb bomb recipes support you and help you elevate your family dinner meals. Below are some additional posts on freezing and preserving fresh herbs to provide you with more information.
