Laundry is one of those things that never really gets "done." It just keeps coming back. That's why your laundry room (affiliate) is set up matters more than most people think. If the space is cluttered, awkward, or hard to use, even a small load can feel like more than it needs to be.

A lot of the time, it's not the laundry itself that's the problem. It's everything around it. Digging for supplies, not having space to fold, clothes piling up because there's nowhere to put them, it all slows you down and makes the whole process more frustrating than it needs to be.

Your laundry room (affiliate) doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to make doing laundry easier, faster, and less frustrating. When the space works with you instead of against you, it's easier to stay on top of it and keep things from piling up.

This post was shared by guest blogger, Olivia Parks, owner of Professional Organizer New Orleans and Nola Organizers.

Key Takeaways

  • A cluttered laundry room (affiliate) slows you down, making the chore feel more frustrating than it needs to be.
  • Use hampers that pre-sort laundry to eliminate the hassle of sorting later.
  • Keep surfaces clear for efficient folding and workspace, enhancing the overall usability of the room.
  • Add trash cans (affiliate) to manage laundry waste, helping keep the area clean and organized.
  • Create a simple laundry routine (affiliate) to prevent piles and make the entire process smoother.

1. Use Hampers That Pre-Sort for You

Sorting laundry is one of the easiest steps to put off, especially when everything is mixed in one basket. It adds an extra step every time you go to do a load, which slows you down before you even start.

Using multiple hampers or a divided hamper system completely removes that step. You can separate lights, darks, and delicates as clothes are being dropped in, instead of dealing with them later.

When it's time to do laundry, you can grab a section or a single hamper and start right away. No digging through piles, no second-guessing what goes where.

It also helps keep things more consistent. When sorting becomes automatic, you're less likely to end up with overloaded or mixed loads that don't wash as well.

2. Clear Off Surfaces

The top of the washer and dryer often becomes a catch-all. Detergent, random items, clothes that haven't been folded yet, things that don't belong there at all. It builds up quickly.

The problem is that once those surfaces are covered, you lose your workspace. Something as simple as folding a load of laundry becomes harder because you have to move things out of the way first.

That extra step might seem small, but it adds friction. And when laundry already feels like a chore, even small annoyances can be enough to delay it.

Keeping those surfaces mostly clear gives you a place to work. You can take clothes straight from the dryer and fold them right there instead of carrying them somewhere else or letting them sit.

It also makes the space feel more manageable. When everything has a place and surfaces aren't overloaded, the room feels easier to use overall.

3. Keep a Trash Can Nearby

This is one of those small things that really helps. Laundry creates a surprising amount of waste: lint, dryer sheets, tags, empty detergent containers, and random items from pockets.

Without a trash can (affiliate) in the room, those things tend to pile up. They get set on surfaces, left in corners, or carried into other areas of the house and forgotten.

Having a small trash can (affiliate) right there keeps everything contained. You can throw things away as you go instead of setting them aside "for later," which usually means they just stay there.

It helps keep the space cleaner without adding any extra effort. And when the room stays cleaner, it's easier to keep it organized long-term.

4. Don't Overfill the Space

Many laundry rooms end up holding more than they need to. Extra cleaning supplies, bulk items, random storage bins, things that don't have a clear purpose. The more you add, the harder it becomes to use the space. It gets crowded, harder to move around, and more difficult to stay organized.

Keeping only what you actually use in the laundry room (affiliate) will make everything easier. You don't have to dig through items to find what you need, and there's less to manage overall.

This doesn't mean your laundry room (affiliate) has to be empty. It just needs to be intentional. If something isn't used regularly or doesn't belong there, it's probably better stored somewhere else. The fewer items you keep in your laundry room, the less you have to clean, organize, and work around.

5. Add a Rod or Hooks for Air-Drying

Not everything goes in the dryer. And when there's no clear place to hang items, they end up wherever there's space. Over chairs, on doors, across furniture (affiliate). That's how laundry starts to spread into other parts of the house.

Adding a simple rod, wall hooks, or even a small drying rack (affiliate) gives those items a dedicated place to go. Instead of moving them around or leaving them in random spots, everything stays contained in one area.

It also helps keep your routine (affiliate) more efficient. You're not walking around the house hanging things wherever you can find space, and you're less likely to forget about items that need to dry. Most importantly, it keeps laundry from taking over other rooms. When everything has a place in the laundry area, it stays there.

6. Make It Easy to Find Things

If you're storing more than just laundry supplies in your laundry room, it helps to have a simple system. Many people keep extra items there, such as cleaning products, paper goods, tools, and other household supplies. Without some structure, it all starts to blend together and gets harder to find what you need.

Keeping similar items grouped together and giving everything a clear place will really help. You don't need anything complicated or fancy, just a setup that makes it obvious where things go.

This matters even more if multiple people are using the laundry room. When everyone knows where things belong, it's much easier to keep the space organized without constantly fixing it. It also saves time. Instead of digging through bins or cabinets, you can grab what you need right away and move on.

7. Add a Small Folding Area

If you don't have a place to fold clothes, they usually end up sitting in a basket longer than they should. What starts as "I'll get to it later" ends up as piles of clean laundry that never get fully put away.

Even a small folding area can change that. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a clear surface where you can take clothes straight from the dryer and handle them right away. That could be the top of your machines, a nearby shelf, or a simple countertop.

The essential part is making it easy to finish the job while you're already there. When you have to carry clothes to another room or clear off space first, it adds just enough friction to slow you down or make you put it off.

Having a dedicated spot keeps everything moving. You dry a load, fold it right there, and it's ready to be put away. No extra steps, no extra decisions. Check out Sabrina's organizing post about how to use baskets to keep your laundry organized.

It also helps keep the rest of your home from getting taken over by laundry. When clothes are folded right away, they're less likely to end up on beds, chairs, or random surfaces around the house.

8. Keep a Simple Laundry Routine

A lot of the frustration with laundry isn't just the space; it's not having a clear routine (affiliate). When everything piles up, it feels like a bigger task than it needs to be.

Setting a simple routine (affiliate) makes the whole laundry process easier. That could mean doing a load on certain days, keeping loads smaller, or just staying consistent so it doesn't all build up at once.

When your laundry room is set up well and you have a routine (affiliate) to match, everything flows better. You're not sorting huge piles, running multiple loads back to back, or trying to find space for everything at once.

It also helps you stay on top of it without overthinking it. Instead of laundry feeling like a big chore, it becomes part of your normal schedule.

Make It Easier on Yourself

You don't need a big space or a full makeover to make your laundry room work better. A few small changes to how it's set up can make doing laundry feel much easier.

When things are easy to find and easy to use, you're not wasting time digging for supplies, moving things out of the way, or putting off a load because it feels like a hassle. You can walk in, get it done, and move on.

That's really the goal. Laundry is something you're always going to have to deal with, so the easier you make the process, the less it feels like a chore hanging over you.

Even small improvements add up. It all makes it quicker to stay on top of things, so laundry doesn't pile up and take over your time or your house. I hope these organizing your laundry room tips help you get your space organized and improve your workflow.
