Each year, we visit an orchard in our area. It's been a tradition since my husband, and I got married over 20 years ago. They have everything from hayrides, apple slinging, animal feeding, face painting for kids, lots of food, fall decorations for the home, pumpkin and other fruit picking, and several different kid activities. Usually, we take our kids' friends with us, but this year it was just the four of us. We enjoyed the time together and were able to go early. This orchard gets very crowded starting around lunch.

This year, while walking around the orchard feeding the animals, we found some acorns and their tops on the ground. It gave me an idea, why not make acorn mime people? It's so easy and is a great Mommy/Daddy and child craft project. Here is how I made them.
Before Acorn Size
Here is an image of the acorn size that I used. The tops do come off easily. If they don't, you can use an Exacto knife (Affiliate Link) to help pry them off. You want to get acorns that have a larger bottom, so you can easily make the face.
Supplies Used to Make These Acorn Memes People
The supplies were very simple.
- 5 acorns with tops that are removable - if you want artificial acorns, you can buy them on Amazon (affiliate).
- I used one and black spray paint.
- A fine-tip paintbrush
- All-purpose Black acrylic paint for the face
- Pink acrylic paint for the face
- Googly eyes - small
- Glue gun and stick
- Optional: a bracelet gift box with satin fabric inside.
How to Make These Acorn Memes People?
First, remove the top from the bottom of the acorn. This may fall off easily or may take some prying with an Exacto knife (Affiliate Link). Note: this image is of both parts. When the Acorn is fully grown and ready to fall, the top will fall off the bottom. The acorn base, when ripe, will be browner than my image here.
Then, I spray-painted these acorns white. It took some time to dry. But definitely needed a second coat. The spray paint I used was a little old, and because of that, it made the paint a little thicker on the acorn. I didn't mind it, but when I drew on the face, I noticed it would smudge a little.

Then I spray-painted the tops black. It needed to dry for at least 2 hours.
I used black and pink permanent markers to add to the face. The fine tip is best, but medium worked too. Then with a hot glue gun (Affiliate Link), I added eyes and hair to my first one to see how it looked. My daughter said it looked scary. So I only did one.
Then, I added the hat (acorn top) with the hot glue gun (Affiliate Link). The hat(beret) was attached at a little angle so you could easily see the face.

Here is the finished product. I thought they looked really cute and would try them again. Maybe this type makes them look a little less scary. What do you think?

How long did it take to make these Mime People?
It only took me about four hours to make these cuties. There was a lot of drying time between the steps, so there was a lot of time waiting for them to dry. Feel free to check out this collection of acorn crafts for the fall from ModPodge.

These are super cute! We have a dearth of acorns this year. The squirrels and chipmunks are on a tear collecting them (and burying them in my flower beds!) before I get my hands on them.
However, I know the Mom I'm going to share this with.
We have Sweet Gum Pod trees in our front yard. Zillions of them. A few years ago I painted a bunch red and green and each Christmas, I put them in a big vase that I wrap with lights. It's my only way to make friends with these buggers!

When the boys were still all at home we used to do things like decorate for Halloween and what not and I could have used these ideas then. Now with no children at home and grandchildren all to far away to do crafts with them, we no longer bother. I do like how orchards and farmers have opened up their properties for different occassions - lot of work goes into that.
