This week I am doing an extra DIY post to share a wreath that I made in my own home. I am not a florist, nor do I claim to know 100% of what I am doing. But, when I tell you this was super easy to make, I am telling you the truth. Besides me googling how to make a bow, it was one of the quickest projects I have done in a long time. Follow along and check out how you, too, can make this holiday wreath with fresh herbs.
Let me tell you the back story (affiliate). I love my herb garden. But, at the end of the season, I end up with many herbs, especially rosemary and St. John's Wort. They look so vibrate that I feel the need to use them for food and DIY projects if I can. So, this year, I decided to make a wreath from scratch to use up some of the herbs. Follow along and see how I made this holiday wreath with fresh herbs.
Note: the fresh herbs start to dry after hanging for a few days. That's OK. It still looks great. And, at the end of the season, when you want to take them down, you can remove the dried herbs and use the grapevine wreath again next year. Because rosemary has a thick bark, I did not need to hot glue it in place. I just weaved it through the grapevine wreath.
What tools and stuff do I need to make this DIY holiday wreath with fresh herbs?
A gold-sprayed grapevine wreath (light color)
A large bunch of freshly cut rosemary
A large bunch of newly cut St. John's Wort
1 bunch of white silk flowers
1 spool of wire, gold plaid ribbon 2-3 inches wide
Scissors
1 glue gun (affiliate)
3 hot glue sticks
How to make this DIY holiday wreath with fresh herbs?
Well, it's pretty easy.
First, I cut the herbs from the garden and made sure I had a variety of lengths from 4-8 inches long. Then I laid them out on cardboard to dry a bit. I laid them there for about 2-3 hours.
Then, I made the ribbon. Below is a video I found on YouTube from Michael's YouTube channel. I then determined where I wanted the ribbon to go.
Then, I started weaving the rosemary around the grapevine wreath. It stayed pretty well, and I did not have to use the hot glue that much. After I did the rosemary, I started with the St. John's Wart leaves. Those were a little more flexible and needed a little glue to keep them from sliding out. I used almost all of the herbs I had cut.
Then, I cut the silk flowers stems to about 3 inches. Then hot glued them to the various areas on the wreath that I wanted them to be displayed. So I wasn't gluing the herbs; I moved the herbs to get to the grapevine wreath if it were covered.
I attached the prepaid bow over the top of the grapevine with the hot glue and fluffed up the bow. Also, I hot glued the ribbon ends, so the ribbon was affixed to the wreath. I then moved around the wreath to see any bald spots I needed to fill in.
And that's it! What do you think of the finished product? I love it! And it looks great on our door.
