Repurposing Doily on Canvas Wall Art Craft Project

I love reusing other people's crochet doilies. I do not crochet, but my daughter and grandmother did. So, when I can get a hold of some doilies from a smoke-free home, I can't wait to create a Doily on Canvas Wall Art project. Today, I will show you this super easy DIY project that I enjoyed making. What inspired me to do this Doily on Canvas Wall Art?

I repurposed a few of these doilies in the past and wanted to do another smaller canvas upcycling with doilies made by an extended relative. It gives a vintage feel and shows the creative workmanship of a near and dear relative. It allows for a great homemade touch in my home. Here is my other Doily on canvas wall art I made for my cousin's home if you want to see the steps for that DIY Upcycling project.

What supplies did I use to make this Doily on Canvas Wall Art?

The items I used are relatively simple.

• 1 - 12 x 12-inch canvas - painted black or black canvas
• 4 2 round and two rectangular fabric doilies in white.
• 3 Flat faux flowers that are light pink
• Mod Podge (Affiliate Link) on canvas and container to pour it into is optional
• Disposable sponge brush - medium to large size
• Scissors (fabric)
• Clear Gorilla Glue

How much did it cost to make this Doily on Canvas Wall Art?

This project cost about $10.00 because I was given most of the items and had to buy the Mod Podge (Affiliate Link) and disposable sponge brush.

How long did it take to make Doily on Canvas Wall Art?

This project took me about 3 hours, including drying time in between.

How do you make this Doily on Canvas wall art?

First, if you have a white canvas, use black acrylic paint to paint the entire canvas. Let it dry completely.

Then, place the round doilies in the upper left and lower right corners so they are symmetrical. Add enough Mod Podge (Affiliate Link) to the canvas on these corners with the disposable sponge brush, adding a little to the sides and a little to the back and the fabric to keep it flat. Let those corners of fabric/canvas dry.

Note: If you find that the crochet doily is curling up on the edges, add a little more Mod Podge (Affiliate Link) to those edges and press down those edges.

Also, if you find that when you press the doily down, the circles become ovals, you can adjust the fabric while you are there before it dries to make it a circle again.

Then, it is time to work on the other two corners. I used two small rectangular white doilies. I wanted to create a gap between each doily -enough gap that looks like a cross. Be sure to Mod Podge (Affiliate Link) the edges and press the items down the sides of the canvas. Let it dry completely.

And here is what it looks like with all four corners glued on the canvas.

Now, with fabric scissors, you can cut the excess doily edges on the back of the canvas. If you see missed areas, you can retouch those areas of the doilies with Mod Podge (Affiliate Link) and let them dry.

Next, you can glue the flowers in the center with clear gorilla glue. Let it dry completely before moving it. You can add your photo of the person who made these doilies for a customized touch.
