It's the start of grilling season, so for my first recipe. Grilling season is a great time to revisit our favorite collection of recipes. This one is one of my favorites: Mexican Turkey Burger. Over the years, I have modified it and swapped out the ingredients depending on my family’s dietary needs.
I’ve done this recipe as a regular turkey burger recipe with regular breadcrumbs. I also swapped out the breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option. And it was still delicious. And recently swapped the egg out for a non-egg option (vegan) option since a family member can’t eat eggs. All these options gave these Mexican Turkey Burgers a great taste. And, when adding the toppings, we were able to enhance the deliciousness.
And best of all, this recipe is one of my favorite freezer meal recipes. If you don’t know what freezer meals are, let me explain.

Now that you decided what type of Mexican turkey burger recipe you will make, be sure to figure out the toppings. Below are the toppings that I prefer on turkey burgers and would work nicely with these burgers.
What Additions and Toppings go with Turkey Burger?
Whole Wheat Rolls - of course. Or you can do a Gluten-Free bun or have it on lettuce.
Slice of cheese or slice of non-dairy cheese - depending on how large you make your turkey burger, you can decide to add half a slice of cheese or maybe two.
Lettuce - a slice or two of lettuce works nicely with the burger.
Tomato - a thin slice of tomato goes nicely with this dish too.
Avocado or Mayo - Since this recipe is on the dry side, you may want to add some extra fat when you build your sandwich. You can add some slices of avocado or a dollop of mayo—your choice.
Red Onion - if you prefer onion, you can add a thin slice of red onion as well.
How to make Mexican Turkey Burgers?
First, place all the ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Add the breadcrumbs last a bit at a time so you can make sure the mix isn't too sticky. It holds up better in the freezer if it is less sticky. If you use gluten-free breadcrumbs, it may get dry fast, so how much GF breadcrumbs you add.
Then, form the burgers. This recipe makes 6 burgers. I don't like my burgers too large, so 6 burgers make a good serving size.
At this point, to cook on the grill, use non-stick spray on one size and place it on the grill. Cook for 6-10 minutes and then turn over and cook for another 6-10 minutes or until done. Make sure there is no pink inside.
