There are many ways to improve your productivity in your day, from reducing your distractions throughout your day to combining smaller similar tasks, just to name a few. But, the first thing that needs to be done to have a productive day truly is to create a to-do list.

To-do Lists can be used for many purposes.
People create a list for many reasons. They may need a reminder, and it may be an essential task that has to be done by a particular time. They may need to call someone and talk about specific topics. To-do Lists can be made ahead of time to help someone clear their confusion about a topic. All of these reasons will help you get the most out of your day.
The benefits of to-do lists.
There are many benefits to making to-do lists (Affiliate Link). Everyone who creates a to-do list has some of these reasons in common. They want to reduce the stress of a situation, and they are trying to control their time and make it better for themselves. It helps us stay on a structured day to feel more in control of our days. A study has shown that while tasks we haven't done distract people, planning to do the job makes us less anxious about it.
How to create a to-do list?
When creating a list, the tasks on the list do not need to be too detailed. But, it must give you direction. Just saying, "Write an email," will tell you nothing when it is time to do it. Instead, writing something like, "Write an email on ...." with a handful of points you want to make in the email will get you started quickly when you block out time to do the email.
A to-do list helps you remember what needs to be completed. Some people like to write out bullet points with brief comments, and others prefer a detailed outline of each task. It is up to the person writing the list and what works best for them. If you like to be more detailed in your description of tasks, write down every step.
But where do you start when making a to-do list? I found that doing a brain dump is helpful. Below is how you do it.
How to turn a "brain dump" of to-do tasks into a functional to-do list?
For daily tasks, you may want to try a brain dump. This type of to-do list is useful when you have several tasks. To do this, start by writing down everything that needs completing. Start from the top of the page and work your way down.
After you complete the "brain dump," you should feel a sense of anxiety and relief. It is an odd combination of feelings, but we are not done yet.
Now, take a break for about 15 minutes or so.
Then, go back to the list and use a number or letter to assign the order of priority or importance for each task you wrote down. Add an 'A' or '1' to the most important task and work your way to however many tasks you have.

Our brains usually do not recall things in order, so this will help you determine the order after you write down the list. If you can't finish your list, create a new one for the next day by moving the few tasks that are left to the beginning of the next day and adding your new to-dos for that day.

Lists are lifesavers because they're where I get my to-do lists from. Without the big picture of what needs to be done, it't tough to do more than react to emergencies and distractions.
I make a daily to do list pulling from my big list, and it's a great way to see what the "next step" in a bigger project can be.

You've got great suggestions in this post, Sabrina. I couldn't make it through a day without my lists - I keep on in Google Tasks so it's right next to my email, and one in Evernote that is specific to clients. I used to rebel against the digital lists, but it's so much easier to have them with me everywhere than trying to keep track of pieces of paper.

I use my CRM task list as my to-do list. When I started I put only business to-dos on it, but then it worked so well I started adding personal to-do as well. I work from home most of the time so it's easy to schedule personal to-do throughout the business day for me. A to-do list is a must for me these days, so I don't forget anything.

You're so right — a good to do list is essential! I'm good at keeping (and accomplishing) a list for today's items, but when I'm feeling overwhelmed by a busy week, a brain dump is essential. I've tried putting it all on a big piece of paper, but when the tasks are mostly unrelated, the linearity of the paper makes me feel like I've I should be sorting before even writing. When I get stressed like that, I've found some magic in writing each task on a separate sticky note or index cards. (Sticky notes are great, because then you can turn a wall into a giant kanban board! Index cards are sortable and make it easy to do that 1, 2, 3 prioritizing in a more tangible way.)

I'm a HUGE fan of making lists! I don't want to have to remember everything. And even if I did, I don't think my brain could hold all that information with complete confidence. So the list not only gives my day (or project) direction, it makes me feel confident that I will get to the important things (and little things too.)
I use the "2Do" app to track my action items. Each one starts with a verb which helps me immediately identify what type of action is required. I make the entry as concise and identifiable as possible. Sometimes it will point me to look at a different list because projects most likely have their own, more extensive list.
