If you read my posts, you know I have a smaller home. We have many rooms, but they are narrow and difficult to accommodate the average piece of furniture (affiliate). It seems that every room has a unique wall that requires a piece of furniture (affiliate) smaller than usual to fit in. It isn't charming. Well, enough with complaining, back to the post. Here's how customizing IKEA cabinets for a small space made the area more organized.

In my walk-out basement, we have a long and narrow family room ten ft x 22 ft. There is a heater on the wall that heats the space, a sump pump on the floor, a back door and window and one closet door and an opening to the other part of the kitchen. You can see why this space is challenging, right? Luckily, I have experience measuring spaces and areas for furniture (affiliate) placement. I measured the length, width, and height of the areas I wanted to fit storage cabinets. And, with my measurements in hand, I headed to the nearest Ikea.
Customize Ikea Cabinets For A Family Room
I found these wonderful cabinets that fit perfectly in my space! I designed the cabinet layout with glass doors and wood fronts to break up the monotony of the brown wood. Anyway, I chose a design (Ikea's Besta brand was what I decided) that worked with the areas I needed to organize, in this case, my window and the heater walls. The inside also had many options, even though I didn't need anything but shelves (affiliate). Check out the results!
I stored items in this cabinet, which included my sewing machine, buttons, work in bins, scrapbook (affiliate) supplies, a cable box, a video game console, photo albums, and video games, using baskets with and without lids. I was also able to frame it around a window. The doors do a great job of hiding the clutter and organizing it!
If you are looking for a cabinet for your unique room, consider cabinets that are versatile and can be combined to create a single unit. Ensure they offer multiple options, allowing you to tailor the cabinet to your specific needs. Above all, have fun making your cabinets exactly what you want and never settle for something that doesn't fill your needs. Let me know how your cabinets work out.
Updated 2025
OK, I am revisiting this post because some things have changed. The cabinets are still holding up, and they are doing great. Here are the updates, and check out the images below to see where they are now.
The television stand is still standing.
I am still using the IKEA Besta stand for the TV, but now our TV is significantly larger.
The virtual cabinets were separated.
The center cabinet is no longer in use and has been donated; I currently have only one virtual cabinet in my office. I needed to put a small desk in front of the window because I use it to make videos for my DIY projects.
The other cabinet is now in the closet where I store the party supplies and paper towels for the house.
