What to Keep in Your Shed

It's time to do some Spring Cleaning. We will be going into our sheds (Affiliate Link) and pulling out tools (Affiliate Link) and equipment to get our lawns and patio ready for the summer. This is also a great time to do some shed (Affiliate Link) organizing!

What to Keep in Your Shed: A List of Things to Keep in Your Shed

Key things to keep in the shed.

Everyone has a different set of shed (Affiliate Link) needs. Below are just some of the common items we may be storing in our sheds (Affiliate Link) to make room in our homes and garages. I am also sharing my favorite tips for shed (Affiliate Link) organization below.

Tools to use outside

Tools (Affiliate Link) for gardening and mowing, like shovels, rakes (Affiliate Link), brooms, electric blowers (Affiliate Link), mowers, and seeders. All these items need a home in the shed (Affiliate Link) for easy access.

Extra supplies for trimmers/mowers. Things like trash bags (Affiliate Link), leaf bags, utility knives, work gloves, etc... are important to have at your fingertips. These items are the supplies you will need when doing the tasks. If you don't have bags in your shed (Affiliate Link), get some! This will save you time when doing the tasks.

Bird/animal feeders and supplies

Supplies for any bird feeders (Affiliate Link) or animal feeders you may have. Do you have animals in the backyard that you want to feed? These items can be stored in the shed (Affiliate Link).

Furniture and tarps/covers

Make room for your lawn furniture cushions (Affiliate Link), winter covers for furniture (Affiliate Link), and other supplies used at that time. At the end of the season, there is so much to store and protect, such as having an area.

Use 18+ inch shelving and mount to the wall

Adding shelving (Affiliate Link) to the wall would be helpful for the cushions since you can lay them flat.

Fold Covers for Furniture the same way and store Vertically

And, the winter covers for the furniture (Affiliate Link) should be folded up and stored in a container to protect them from bugs. It's also helpful to have the ropes and other fasteners that will be used in the bin.

5 Gallon Cleaned Paint Buckets are great for soil

Add and stack the containers for soil. I found that using cleaned 5-gallon paint buckets with lids (Affiliate Link) you can buy at the hardware store is a great option for storing gardening soil, topsoil, and potting soil.

Organization in a shed (Affiliate Link) is important, not just for smaller sheds (Affiliate Link) but larger ones, too. Below are some more tips on how to organize these items.

More Shed Organizing Tips:

Shelving is key for good organization in a shed.

Put shelving (Affiliate Link) in your shed (Affiliate Link) to get items off the floor.  In small spaces, always go vertical with storage. If your floor is uneven, attach earthquake straps to shelving (Affiliate Link) and wall studs. It makes it safer to walk around the space, and you can fit more items in the shed (Affiliate Link).

Small things can be stored in labeled shoe box-size plastic containers

If you have several small items, use clear plastic containers (Affiliate Link) like these from Amazon (Affiliate Link) ( Shoe Boxes by EOENVIVS 12 Pk Plastic (Affiliate Link) ) to hold these items.  Sort these items by task or type of article.  Place these bins on vertical shelves (Affiliate Link) so they do not fall behind larger items stored in your shed (Affiliate Link).

Wall track systems are great for sheds

Wall tracks work nicely for thin and flat long tools (Affiliate Link) like rakes (Affiliate Link) and other things. Hang the rack holder bar at least 6 feet high so they will not be blocked by other things lying on the floor in front of them. Feel free to check out the DIY project we did called HOW TO INCREASE SPACE USING SHED ORGANIZATION TOOLS to help you organize your tools (Affiliate Link) in your shed (Affiliate Link).

Sharable checklist image.

what to keep in your shed checklist
A List of Things to Keep in Your Shed (Affiliate Link)

As you can see in the checklist (Affiliate Link) above, I added lines for you to add your own items to customize this list for your shed (Affiliate Link). Print, laminate, and hang this list in your shed (Affiliate Link).  Using a dry-erase marker, you can add items or circle items that need to be purchased as a reminder.

And I know that when we put the shelves (Affiliate Link) up in our shed (Affiliate Link), it became more accessible to everyone—no climbing over things, no taking things out to get to other things—it really made a difference.

Now it's your turn. Please comment below and let me know what you store in your shed (Affiliate Link).

I’m glad to have this information, especially at this time of year. I have a client who I would love to offer a few suggestions to because I noticed that her shed is in desperate need of organization.
And what exactly is in a “she-shed?”

The Urban Dictionary describes a "She-Shed" as "A private room where a woman can relax, be alone and do whatever she pleases. Similar to a Man Cave." It's a place usually in a shed. =)

Some great product ideas. We have a large shed in our backyard. It's my husband's domain. He works for a construction company and brings things home all the time that go into the shed. So there is a little of everything in there.

My husband built some shelves in our shed, and then he added some pegboard along the back wall. That was really great because it gave us space to stash the big and heavy, but also hang the long and narrow. Emptying it out is always the best way to begin. Be careful in a shed, you might come across some little critters 🙂

I helped my sister move an old shelving unit from her basement to the shed. It was amazing how much floor space it freed up - easier to move around and easier to find things.
