Your College Success Journey Starts Here

College success isn't about perfection - it's about having the right systems, strategies, and mindset to handle whatever comes your way. The posts in this roundup represent many years of experience helping family members and students navigate the college journey successfully.

The key (affiliate) to success and a well-organized system is to start small. Follow the steps below to get everything organized for your new adventure.

  1. Get your living space organized and create systems for managing your time and tasks.
  2. Determine your self-care routines, study strategies, and specific tips tailored to your unique situation.
  3. Figure out what feels overwhelming and work on making that particular thing less so. It could involve researching to find solutions. It could be talking to other peers or teachers.

And be flexible with your systems when you're in college. No matter how much planning you do and how well you set things up, when you are actually in college, you may have to make adjustments. Organization isn't about being rigid - it's about creating freedom.

Remember, systems that are in place give you the freedom to learn, grow, and experience college life.

I'm always amazed when I look back and see how well-prepared I was for college and dorm life, especially considering there were almost no books and certainly no internet sites to help me plan it. My mother hadn't gone away to college (and while my sister lived in the dorms, it was in our own city, and she did her college prep all on her own, without wanting help), so it's pretty wild that armed with a few back issues of Seventeen Magazine and free run of Bed, Bath, and Beyond we figured out the resources and organization.

As for the time management, I think I winged that based on my own style, and all of the self-care (though we never called it that) came from what my mother and I fondly call The Mommy Encyclopedia (everything I learned by osmosis or could get from the other end of a long-distance call). You've managed to gather everything — the common sense and the modern obstacles — into one superior resource!

Thanks, Julie. I know what you mean, I felt the same way. While my mother didn't have a great organizing skill. I was able to manage and make my way through commuting to college, then I transferred and lived on campus. So, when my kids came along, I recalled what worked for me and what didn't and passed that on to them. I especially like the kids perspective posts in my collection. My daughter gave her perspective and tips for living in a big city for college and my son shared how to get out there and meet people. It was wonderful to interview both of them for those pieces. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I really appreciate it.

I now know what a round up is. This is a very comprehensive guide for moving to University or college. Thank you for all the time and enjoy you put into writing this. Being adaptable and flexible is so important for all the new situations and personalities they will meet. I like that you reinforced that routines help make more time for other things. Another idea I like to talk about with students is part-time jobs to help offset the cost of their education and lower their debt at the end of their education. Balancing school and a job also teaches time management skills.

What a comprehensive collection of checklists, guides, and posts! It's wonderful having this in one place. I'm sure college students and parents will and have benefitted greatly from all of your advice and suggestions.

I have vivid memories of our daughters' college years. It was a big learning experience for them and us. Getting them ready emotionally was one aspect, but there were other things, too, like the physical prep and organization needed. We had checklists and many conversations to help with the process. Beautiful memories of a sweet and growth-filled time.

This post is a great place to go, especially if you are going through the process for the first time. Such a wealth of information.

I always remember how the girls were planning their college move for months and the guys were like, "Oh, I leave for college tomorrow, better throw some stuff in a trash bag." LOL!
